My current camera won't allow it so after a day's picture taking with hardly any battery life left, when copying the photos to my PC the battery dies! Which means I have to remove and recharge it just to be able to copy my pictures across! This is really annoying when you consider my PC could be supplying it with 500mA to charge it as it's copying.
You just need a card reader for your CF card … that is what most users of DSLR's have been using for years.
And no, the battery charger that came with your Canon produces much more than just the power necessary to charge your battery in s few hours .. it also prevents overcharging … some even condition the Li-ion batteries. The USB data port on your computer only provides unregulated 5v power suitable for some devices that draw very low amps (under 500 mA … most battery chargers produce charging voltages at nearly one amp). Perhaps most importantly, there is no connection between the USB port on your camera and its battery.
